About the Job

The Outpatient Surgery Coder is responsible for evaluating medical records documentation and coding procedures done in the Ambulatory Surgery Center. The seasoned professional for this job needs superior communication and computer skills.

Job Requirements

  • Minimum 5 years' medical coding experience preferably in a surgery based setting.
  • Ability to read and dissect operative notes to apply correct ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS, and modifier assignment.
  • Comply with all legal requirements regarding coding procedures and practice.
  • Strong knowledge of ICD-10 diagnosis codes and CPT/HCPCS procedure codes.
  • Ensure correct coding compliance for procedures performed for various specialties.
  • Work in a high volume medical coding environment while maintaining exceptional standards of excellence.
  • Relays any necessary information to necessary departments.
  • Participates in educational activities and reports needed information to Reimbursement Manager.
  • Maintains expert knowledge of coding work-flow and optimizes use of available technology.
  • Responsible for helping review insurance denials related to diagnosis/CPT issues.
  • Certification required prior to hire date Certified ASC Coder Preferred

Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Maintains a thorough understanding of anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, disease processes and surgical techniques through participation in continuing education programs to effectively apply ICD-10 and CPT coding guidelines to outpatient diagnoses and procedures.
  • Interprets progress notes, operative reports, discharge summaries, and charge documents as necessary to determine services provided and accurately assign CPT and ICD-10 coding to these services.
  • Enters appropriate data into the Billing System by selecting the appropriate codes, diagnosis, modifiers, etc.
  • Contacts physicians as needed regarding procedures and other services to ensure proper coding.
  • Responsible for reviewing patient logs and other reports of clinical activity to ensure billing is captured for all patients.

  • Specialty Coding in ASC
  • Specialty Coding in Cardiology
  • Specialty Coding in Nephrology

  • Salary commensurate upon education level and/or experience
  • Education Required High School or equivalent
  • Coding Certification Required through AAPC and/or AHIMA

  • Shift Details: Monday - Friday 40 hours per week ONSITE
